Our culture is the most selfish in human history. (Don’t quote me on that, but it’s at least gotta be up there, right?)
We want everything on our terms – our careers, our marriages, our families. We pride ourselves on total self-freedom, being in control. I define myself, I decide what’s true, I decide my purpose in life. (Excuse my generalization, but you get my point).
In effect, we crown ourselves rulers of the tiny kingdoms that become our souls. And, when we declare ourselves as lord of our lives, there’s little room for the Lord of Lords.
The truth is – defining ourselves and our purpose is not a task that we actually want. We simply cannot fulfill ourselves or our deepest longings. We are not our own creators. We are creatures – created by the Creator.
Our lives are not blazing a new trail into the great unknown, destination TBD. We already have a purpose and meaning to life. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you.” Jer 1:5
Our call is to be united to God. During our lives, we strive to walk the narrow path that leads back to Him. Anything other than that is incomplete.
And, to walk this narrow path – we must give up our tiny kingdom. We must come before our Creator and lay it all at His feet.
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment.” Matthew 22:37-38
We offer ourselves – everything, heart, soul, mind – in the service of His Kingdom, not our own.
Be the Men.
