Continuing our reflection on Mary from yesterday, in the Blessed Virgin we have a model and guide, but we also have hope.
Even going back to the beginning, we see that Mary plays a special role in God’s plan of salvation. After the fall in the Garden, God says to the serpent: “I will put enmities between thee and the woman… she shall crush thy head” Gen 3:15
Scholars typically agree that this passage in Genesis refers not to Eve, but to the new Eve, Mary. We see it depicted in so many Marian statues – her foot on the serpent’s head. We also hear Our Lady’s own words and promise from her apparitions at Fatima: “In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph.” In this great battle, there is hope.
But, it’s also important to remember by what power Mary will triumph. It’s not her own, but through her Son. In a true spirit of humility, Mary shows us the way of serving God, submitting to His Holy will, and giving ourselves completely to Him. “For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.” Lk 1:48
While we have not been preserved from sin, this way of humility is the path that we are called to follow. And, the path of Mary leads to one place, her Son.
To Jesus, through Mary.
