Recently, I finally got around to reading a book that’s been on my To-Read List for a good while. The book is From Star Wars to Superman: Christ Figures in Science Fiction and Superhero Films.
As someone who grew up watching the Original Star Wars and listening to my dad retell comic book stories about Captain America and the X-men, I thought it would be right up my alley.
The title speaks for itself, but the book is essentially about what these popular movies and stories have to say about Christ, humanity, and salvation.
In a lot of movies, we can find a character that is a “Christ Figure” embodying some aspects of a savior and redeemer. But, these Blockbuster Hollywood productions often just miss the mark.
It really comes as no surprise, even in our own lives, we witness and we ourselves sometimes fall prey to believing in our version of Jesus, or our version of the Bible.
This book, and these movies for that matter, can help us to reflect on the question: Who do you say that I am?
And, as we search, we must remember there’s only one right answer to that question.
