As men, we often don’t like getting help.

In my own profession, I like to say I’m self-taught, as if it’s some kind of badge of honor. Like any skill, achievement, or accomplishment is somehow lessened if you had a teacher.

We can sometimes scrape by with some aspects of life, not when it comes to faith. When it comes to sanctity, there are no points for going it alone or being self-taught.

When Eternal paradise is on the line, it’s actually eternally stupid to refuse help.

The good news is that we have a teacher. Our relationship with Christ is that – a student-teacher relationship. We are disciples following the discipline of the Master. And, we have brothers in faith, priests, scholars, etc who can aid us in following this discipline.

But, this requires humility. We must admit that we don’t have all of the answers. Many of us are not used to being the student. But, if we can swallow our pride, we can become good students to then become great leaders for our families, community, and Church.

At the end of the day, there’s Heaven or Hell. You’re in or you’re out. There are no brownie points for refusing help.

Be the Men,

Mark
