Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. At first glance, this is a bit of a bittersweet feast for us. Christ’s Ascension means that He no longer walks among us, teaching, and healing like He did 2,000 years ago. We can understand why the Apostles just kept staring up at the sky. There’s a kind of loss.
While that’s true, today is also a day of great hope and joy. Christ as Head of His Church has gone before us, to prepare a place for us in Heaven. As His Body, this is God’s promise and His desire for us.
Think about that for a second – God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. God’s not out to “get us.” He’s not writing rules and laws to trip us up and yell “Gotcha!” or “Youuuu’re outta here, Mister!”
He wants to prepare us to be with Him for all eternity. He wants us to follow His Son.
“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
