If you’ve ever seen the movie Unbreakable, then the following might sound familiar. It’s at the climax of the movie, when you realize who the villain is.
“Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I’m not a mistake! It all makes sense! In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain’s going to be? He’s the exact opposite of the hero. And most times they’re friends, like you and me!”
The movie is a unique take for the superhero genre, and this quote calls out a really interesting idea…
Now that I know who you are, I know who I am.
You can add another dimension to it: now that I know who you are, I know who I want to be.
The journey to discovering who we are as Men doesn’t occur in a vacuum. Understanding who we are or who we want to be, often comes from understanding our relation to others – family, friends, enemies and going so far as the devil and God.
For Men of Virtue engaging in the battle of Good versus Evil, we are fighting for good AND fighting against evil. We can see Good in the world, and choose to emulate it. Or, we can witness evil and choose to fight it.
There is a call to arms in the world today. We can come to know who we are called to be by acknowledging the battle exists, and whose fighting it.
Be the Men.
